This guy really pisses me off. Weed? Elite? Born with? he just writes off any skill or effort above his own as being born with it and him being unlucky, when he doesnt know shit. But thats the point of this anyways.
Don't act like it's only Makino that is talking about Weeds vs Elites. The reporters chose to frame their stories in that way even before he brought it up. They were talking about him as a dark horse, or overlooking him entirely, before he ever talked about weeds. And the reporters also acknowledged that they have seen this dynamic play out before.
Likewise, you have Kimura (and others?) in their commentary on the match (and earlier) talking about how Itagaki is a "different breed", a "natural", a "genius", etc. The author makes it clear in this arc ( and elsewhere in the manga) that Itagaki is unusually gifted.
Makino did not just make excuses. He worked his ass off, but he also recognizes that some people are gifted at birth. And either because of that or other reasons, some people get all the limelight while others are overlooked (perhaps even when they deserve not to be).
I agree with you about the fact that he also works his ass off, but no where near the point that Ippo has over the entire series. The natural skill aspect only gets worse from here which completely undermines the working hard from the bottom with nothing, to becoming a great champion. Whats the point of working hard for years if someone who has natural talent and tries a little will make it to your level. I understand why it's here and why it's written like this, I just don't like it, it doesn't feel like Hajime no Ippo

"Not everyone who works hard succeeds, but everyone who has succeeded has worked hard"
since day one Ippo had a natural talent for boxing, specifically his hard-hitting punches, but he still worked every day to get to the level he is now, hard work is extremely important but not everyone can be the champion.
