I'm reading along thinking OK, interesting, and then I get to "a town which, by its isolated nature, is destined to fade away."
Uh, what? How does that work? Nobody can leave, they haven't all been struck sterile, isn't it just as likely they'll end up with massive overpopulation?
I guess this is one of those manga about the Japanese neurosis about their shrinking population.

Not only the shrinking populations, but also the smaller, countryside towns mostly populated by the elderly slowly dying off... but that sentence was mostly grounded on emotions than "science".

I don't think that gene diversity or even consanguinity would ever be a problem, they seem to have enough people. Incest is only a pretty big deal in some parts of the world, it used to be very common for cousins to marry up to the last century, especially in smaller towns. People often blow incest-related risks out of proportion.

Yeah, I'm firmly in the "allegory for current trends" theory with the way that description goes; humans have been shown over the millennia to be perfectly capable of living in small isolated villages with little to no contact with the outside world for centuries.

How are they going to get a plague? If living things really can't pass, through they're under super-quarantine; they'd have to evolve their own diseases? (Although I suppose we might have to sit down and debate whether viruses are living things again.)
