I actually thought it was a very kind gesture from the stepmom. If you notice, she's constantly worried about Natsumi, even reprimanding her own son when he gives her a hard time. Her concern about acting like Haru just shows how much attention and care she paid to both girls, to know how they were, their likes and dislikes, behaviors, etc. A shit stepmom would have neither known nor cared
