I wonder how they went on recruiting mercs historically those days, just pitch a recruitment tent in a neutral city or far enough city from the carnage?

historically, mercenary bands in medieval europe were formed by

1) joining other mercenaries/bandits that got their bands badly beaten
2) accepting young men (peasants often) that wanted to try their luck (or escape starvation or the justice of their feudal lord)
3) hiring nobles without a land (usually third sons and further down, illegitimate sons, poor knights)
4) and in the worst cases, conscripting whoever they get their hands on before the local feudal lords hear about it

Thanks.No 4 seems like what feudal lords do when their king calls for an army, the conscripting part at least.Also, No 2 and no 4 sounds like a recipe to get whacked by local lords too.I guess they recruit and scurry off to find job elsewhere or just go against the local lord.
