In case anyone thinks this post-apocalyptic twist came out of nowhere, it was foreshadowed WAY earlier. Back on the island after Vamirio and Helck got teleported, there were ruins of what was clearly an advanced civilization.

THERE IT IS! The ruins at the island already made me conclude that the ancients were modern humans, but didn't expect that virus thingy. Creepy, Berserk level monstrosities. Now, "UNLIMITED ENERGY SUPPLY FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION" is highly suspicious. Damn, can't believe that this awesome manga was hidden from my sight.
