Sounds like the dragons were like the Celestials of MCU Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Screwed with everything and anything...so their offspring are called 'sacred beasts.' Apparently they didn't only do the dirty deed with various animals but humans too, but the sacred traits are recessive so it'll crop up now and then. For animals it would seem they get larger, stronger and more intelligent and for humans there's no obvious deviation.
