It has. Since the "childhood friend" archetype character is the most used for non-FMC characters, its also the character most used to lose. Thats exactly why the trope about the childhood friend always losing is so well-known, even tho there are other "always lose" characters like girls with glasses, blondes or girls with the biggest boobs.

In fact, when the childhood friend is the main girl, they often win...

The hot girl that relentlessly attacks
The token loli (this one hopefully should never win unless a time skip happens)

@Tearsax but here is the thing... it's not that unusual though. It may seem like it's not a lot, but it does happen quite a lot... it only looks like it doesn't because of how many non-childhood friends there are... but think about it, from office ladies, neighbors, classmates, club mates, cousins, coworkers, camp, cest, randomly meeting at restaurant and etc... there is actually a variety of tropes used for the main girl...

And there are tons of manga where the childhood friend and the MC get together... it's not uncommon at all...

And being a childhood friend isn't a factor for the failure of romance, it's just a factor the failure has. Being a childhood friend is a separate factor from the loss... plus, there are more non-childhood friends losing than childhood friends...

The amount of people wrong about FMC being the CF and losing/winning is already this high, lol. But not unexpected as they probably only read shounen. Theres quite a lot of both, Id say on average on shounens they win more and on shoujos or joseis they lose more (end up with a completely different dude whose actually likes them, but not their childhood friend). Seinen is a weird place where anything can happen, no wonder they have the most 'tragedy' tag on romcoms than the other ones.

You can think whatever you want. The one to win is almost always the FMC and childhood friends arent usually the FMC. Thats it.
Of course im talking about romcoms where there are more than one girl after the MC, be it love triangles or harems.

@Tearsax That's only because there are more tropes other than childhood friends, it's not like "not childhood friend" is the only other trope character.... and it still happens often enough... common to the point that saying that it's a losing trope makes no sense...

If you think about it, in a harem, the one most likely to lose is actually the teacher....
