There is two different ways to explain.

1.

There is one unified timeline where cause and effect took a break for a bit which allowed for time travel.

2.

There is a near infinite amount of realities with a new ones created all the time due to quantum physics.

Both of these are actually real world theories, even the break in causality got a precedent since whatever created big bang was outside of cause and effect. There is also the one electron theory.
