Human life is no different to how we treat anything else but to have respect in life is an absolute. Doesn't matter if its a gun, knife, fist etc, point is the one who is still standing is the one still able to go home and eat while the other returns to the dust. Kid came from a timeperiod that death is not a common place idea so yeah he is going to get un-nerved, but he has some one to help him out his wife.

TLDR its just a story lets not make a big deal over semantics.

The reason people feel horrible when they kill a human is two fold:
- One humans have an innate revulsion to the death of another of their species.
- Two people are engrained into their minds through their lives that killing a human is wrong. (like how people can have mental issues when they see a person naked. Even though before civilization people walked around nude all the time.)
