Yeah, birds are actually overall very smart, and animals aren't incapable of understanding you helped them (it's like Aesop's fable of the man who took a thorn out of a lion's paw).

Around here we don't see many herons, I've seen maybe two altogether, but we have more gulls than you can shake a stick at. And if you do they steal the stick from your hands!
Speaking of, there doesn't seem to be many gulls around the breakwater, is it that much difference between Japan and Europe?
