So, on a completely totally unrelated note it occurred to me that there's this theory that states something along the lines of how as simulations we create become more and more realistic, the likelihood of us ourselves already having been in a simulation all along increases.

Seriously, no idea why that's on my mind here. Definitely doesn't seem like the kind of story twist an author might want to pull or anything like that.
