@talas investment for the reader I think. It gave enough depth and coverage of the mc's past to actually make me feel something for her past pain and trauma and understand her circumstances (even if the execution was a complete overreaction on the father's part). I definitely would have been likely to brush this story aside if the flashback had been a one chapter footnote in any case.
