So I'm glad the hero is sensible but wouldn't this be even more easily resolved if Gran just said "I'm fighting to save my mother. Just give her back and I'll quit".

That was his established reason for fighting right? Outside of just generally conflict with the humans? I feel like given the hero's personality he wouldn't just stand by if he knew the Demon Lord's goal wasn't the death of humanity but his mom.
