But those maids stood right behind them xD Why didn't they just say the word when she intended to give the boy some peaches? xD I know it's a 'method of education' but what if he died from that! Wouldn't be what the household wants...

This is rather ironic. In most novels, if the maids thought that the stepmother was forcing her stepson to eat peaches, they would gossip behind her back and think badly of her. Here, the maids think nothing of it and it seems to me that they think he should be treated more harshly.

Woah, I'm actually surprised by the balls on that maid. I mean, to literally act like a superior to someone you work for is kind of nuts... Even if the Duke gave her an order for the boy, the Duchess could literally just run the maid off and/or kill her? Since in the novel, she's portrayed as a pretty terrible step-mom right? So, I doubt she'd of let a maid talk to her that way..
