I think the ending has to at the very least allow for hope, it wouldn't fit the overarching theme otherwise. The whole point so far is that no matter how absolutely terrible life is, no matter the mistakes you've made, there is always a path forward, a path to a better place.

I bet there will be a lot more pain and suffering between here and there though.
