People really aren't understanding that it's the title Earl, not the name Earl. His father is still alive so Abel isn't the Duke or Lord of the household yet, Abel is just the heir and is called Earl since it's a lower rank than Duke. They could've used Young Master or something similar but it's not a big deal.
