The light novel is completely different

the demon never disguised himself as anyone he led the army of monsters there and attempted to attack but MC crushed him. Also in the LN the MC had came wearing a cloak that was supposed to keep him from being recognized (princess wasn't fooled tho). Also a crucial plot point is skipped over too right after leaving to intercept the demon army the chief gives a revelation into the MCs true lineage. And he doesn't stay at the capital after defeated the demon army leader he returns to the village first where the princess confirms he was the person who defeated the demon army leader and then the village chief convinces him to leave to the capital to become an adventurer he doesn't even go there to do any farming.

the manga is doing things different and I don't appreciate it.

Please keep in mind the princess is giving him the only reward she knows he will accept : land to farm.
She already knows things like titles or money are of no interest to him.

As to it being a wasteland, there are several possible causes. But what is important is not its current state but if it can be turned into a fertile farm or not.

I'm still on the fence about this one. It appears it's vastly different from the light novel and too be honest it's moving a bit too fast for me to give a damn about the characters or the outcomes yet, but I'm willing to wait and see what's next.
