I think the author was going for the anthropological feel but only isekai.
Ditching the guns seems appropriate for this kind of story where MC blends in and learns from the locals instead of being an OP MC bitch ass arrogant tourist like mfker who dont give a shit about culture like a dking tourist..

I see some guesses earlier in the thread already, but..

Yea, swords are reasonably light - but training swords are heavy. Since the point is you gotta be strong enough to punch through a guard, and swing the sword longer than your opponent. Nothing deadlier in battle than getting too tired to keep your guard up (and if you can't make any attacks you're also worse than useless).

Bows vs. crossbows - crossbows were considerably slower, but suuper much easier to learn and to use. Archery is a skillset that you need to practice a long time to be good at it. And before modern compound bows you had to be freakishly strong to use powerful bows. (Skeletons of English longbowmen are clearly identifiable as such thanks to deformations acquired during training.)
And if your bow ain't powerful (i.e. easy to use for an untrained rookie), then it sure ain't more powerful than a crossbow.

@sunsun the draw weight range for a siege crossbow starts at 350 lb and ends at 3000 lb, so that's an entirely different story,for a regular weight crossbow it's just way faster to cock them by using the stirrup and by the time you're too tired to cock it you're most likely out of bolts.
