The original used a broad term in the first chapter that means to separate or split up. We associate a couple separating as divorce so it's easy to get confused here but Hatsutaro's character intro in the second chapter says they separated due to work. I've seen other manga scenarios where a married couple lives apart because of career circumstances. I guess it's rare but not unheard of.
