The "special technique" sounds kind of like disassociation. You focus on something really intensely until you're just watching without really processing. That's the easiest way to start disassociating at least.
@Serenata "Dried sushi" means the sushi served at the funeral hall in that scene. Japanese funeral homes serve some food. Sushi is almost always there, but those sushi are not so fresh. That's why Makio and Asa went to a sushi restaurant for better sushi on that day.
Somehow I completely missed that the girl might not be blood-related to the mom and aunt on my first read-through. What's up with that?
