That's true to some extent, but some people don't like saying or hearing "sb's mom", especially these days.
The cultural background makes that custom comparatively acceptable, but it still sounds weird enough even in Japan.
Considering this manga's theme and the author's attitude, I suppose she put subtle criticism into that conversation.
Like Asa said in vol.3, the oasis doesn't melt

I expected Emiri's mom to be the "study, college, marriage, kids, taxes ..... repeat after me, I am free" type of conformist-in-denial just like how Asa's mom is portrayed to be (at least tp my eyes, which might change as we see more of her life baggage in future chapters), but she turned out to be much softer natured.
