Is "whitewashing" a thing in Japan? Is it something they have any awareness of?

Edit: Apparently there was a backlash against the whitewashing from readers of the manga so the mangaka reversed course and decided to not change the heroine's skin color. That chapter's up on mangadex. I don't know if the backlash was over the notion of whitewashing as it's understood in the west or just because a major charm point of their "milk chocolate goddess" had been taken away, but there you are.

Ok so it’s not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I can see how they’re making a point of the fact that the only thing that’s truly changed is her appearance. Now people want to suck up to her and her anger about it shows how superficial it all is.

BUT, I still think it gives the impression that goodness=light skin. Like it’s not a complete coincidence or random chance that her skin lightens, it’s a direct result of the light king being like, you deserved better, now you’re white and can heal people. The reward for her good behavior is still ultimately colourism.

And I doubt that they’re going to take it back, and darken her skin again once her friends are like ‘we always liked you for you’ so it just doesn’t feel like the point is really landing. Like Shrek does a better job of expressing the themes of outsides not reflecting insides and being true to yourself in spite of others opinions of you.

It would have probably also helped if we saw her be a little more hurt when they treated badly before. She was always pretty chill about it which makes this freak out seem a bit, not unbelievable, but strange.

Also, is it just me or does she looks weird now? Maybe it’s because I’m not used to it yet but I feel like her design doesn’t work without the dark skin.

The sudden change in treatment really seems hypocritical and i agree that it seems very opportunistic for people to get her favor just because she has been blessed by the light spirit king. @Reimos I think its different though. You saw the same thing when it happened in the ln and people freaked out. Readers aren't mad that she's no longer tan.
They're mad the author made her no longer tan because there's a certain implication by him that light skin is better. Now that her fate it improving, so does her skin color. Instead of having society around her embrace her dark skin, he has her skin lighten. People wanted the story to fundamentally progress differently.

Considering its a novel dealing with discrimination a choice like this matters.
