Shame, I like that bigger age gap to show more contrast in their maturity... I think that was the charm of the pre-serialization. I'm not saying college kids are tru-blu adults, but it's just harder to think of High school boy as adult, like that "bury the popular guy" joke at the end.

@lolipedofin Maybe the author felt like some people would find the original age gap creepy. On the other hand it did explain why Tsuyu thought he's so cool originally, being a college student, not just a high schooler. I don't particularly care, myself, even though older male, younger female isn't really my thing. At least he was still a student also in the original. However, in a sense this setting does work better since a college dude viewing a middle school kid as a potential love interest would be far more unlikely.

@Kaarme A college dude that is at least 20 (I think he drank), chasing after a middle schooler (at most 14-15) is indeed creepy. But a middle schooler having a crush with a college kid is pretty standard and typical.

What I like in the pre-serialization is how non-chalant and how unconcerned he is of Tsuyu's affection. He may or may not realize she likes him, but he just treated her like a little sister and humor her cuteness, which is what makes the dynamic interesting, and it works because of the age gap. If the series "need" to end with them being a couple, they could just end it while after 3 years passed when Tsuyu is about to or just graduated high school. 5-6 years gap is normal for adults after all.

I just think making the guy a high schooler ruined one of the foundation of the pre-serialization... Anytime he is acting adult-like the way he does in the pre-serialization, it will come across as a kid trying to act cool. But that's just my mileage, others might think differently.

@lolipedofin Yeah, I understand your point. I also agree on things from Tsuyu's perspective. I suppose this is a decision of balance, in addition of lessening any worries of creepiness, assuming that was something the author even thought about at all. In this setting, a romance would be more likely, in the original setting it would be, like you said, a story of an older guy trying to treat a young girl fairly but with little prospects of romance, no matter how much the little sister would pine for it. When I say romance would be more likely, I don't mean it will happen, just that there's a feeling it could happen. In the original setting it was considerably harder to imagine, and thus the atmosphere was just a cool young adult and a girl who dreams of him (in vain).
