You can get away with a fair amount of coats and gear, trench coats and swords however, are not on the list of things that you can get away with. Like if it was a knife, a small firearm, even a moderately sized leather pouch, it's be fine, but a short sword? No bueno. The rule of thumb seems to be thus - if it deforms or gets caught on the jacket, probs no good.

@Yautja and that's before you get into the superfluous belts that artists like to give their characters, to make them look more interesting. Like why does a guy have a belt at an angle from his left armpit to his right thigh, or two sets criss-crossed straps on one leg, and one set on the other (making two "X"s on one leg, upper and lower, with another "X" above the other knee), in some of these manga?

@Madcat6204 well mainly it was the stories the last chapter about the former owners of the sword the solitary thread that connected them all was they all left behind many many children and the fact Nagi connected that sword with the summoning ritual so yeah that was basically what drew me to that ending also @Niemand's reply makes a good point.

It's like a stupid version of old westerns where cowboys wear two belts to hold more ammunition or fire arms. Like wearing one for your pants and one for you gear is sensible, but this, not to mention the size and tension of the thing, is ridiculous. I've always made fun of this guy's character design, but the belt is really just weird, from both a practical and an aesthetic standpoint. It's like a fucking 5 inch belt that for some reason wraps around his body twice and hangs limply. There are some reasons to wear two belts, but if you're not actually holding stuff and it isn't even tight, what's the fuckin point?

but yeah from a practical standpoint a belt that big or two belts for that mather is not really the optimal choice for keeping your pants up.
