From what I understand hero and warrior had a crush on each other during their journey.
But it never got past simple hint that they found eachother attractive.
But hero married the princes out if convenience, the king wanted him to be his next in line and he accepts.
The princess hasn't been much as a partner or lover to mc, seemingly calling him hero most of the time.
Warrior married the mage, someone who she entrusted her life too like the hero.
But it don't last long as he was already on in years and she became a widow.

While I do not like cheating by any means,
I do think a lot of choices were made by this guy in haste to get to this point which make me feel that the better option would have to be the warrior girl.
A princess who doesn't really love the MC and a King using him as an heir,
honestly he shouldn't have married the princess back then and just moved away with warrior girl before the country turned them into political pawns.
I think moving forward they should just either "disappear" or fake their deaths somehow and move on from their previous life.

The princess failed in her duty as both a wife and princess. Almost as if she wanted to minimize their interactions.
