It did have a number of bad conflicts, like the Korean war, Vietnam war, and the original Afghanistan war, but on the other hand, this post Cold War period of ours has had multiple armed conflicts going on all the time, all over the world, including the rise in organised international terrorism, such as that performed by Isis and Boko Haram.

i think you might be mixing it up with the story about the evasion healer guy.

Now i could be wrong, but i think MC was there because of the merchant escort request from the adventurers guild.
As far as his friends know he just walked out on them and became a low rank adventurer.

None of the prominent female characters except for the princesses have shown an iota of wisdom in comparison to others including the white flame magician. This has all the markings of a brain-dead, one-dimensional harem story with the MC going wham,bham thank you ma'am.

Old guy wants to protect his country, and has sacrificed people to protect them.

Rash young hero wants to protect his friends.

The two sides both have people they want to protect, and it just so happens their goals clash with one another.
