This backstory would be more compelling had they revealed even a snippet of information on Touma and/or how fucked in the head he really is.
Outside of that, I really don't want to go through the sordid backstories of each of his cronies.

Most of them are brainwashed/mind broken by shota Ted Bundy anyways...

I am not so sure that he "freed" them.
He might have been the one that is responsible for that research in the first place and simply came to collect the "results" of the research when he was satisfied with their growth.
After all he told them that he was watching them the whole time.
So if he really wanted to save them he could have done so earlier.

Nah. Too little, too late. Simply giving a character a tragic backstory isn't enough to make them sympathetic. The audience still needs a reason to be invested in them.

This felt really out of place for a character most couldn’t care less about let alone empathize with. It’s like how OPM or Overlord build up someone just to show how OP their characters but out of left field. Makes me think of another manga where the MC went through so much worse multiple times then came back as a kid vampire whose life still sucked yet he isn’t a monster, considering he is in fact a monster by definition lol.
