I have to say, this whole battle and the preparations for it do seem to make a lot of sense. I'm no expert on this matter, but I couldn't spot any unbelievable mistakes or stupidity. Each decision made by the enemy leaders do make sense. This is fairly interesting.

Crossbow bolts (and probably a lot of arrows as well) would probably lose a lot of power if they're fired at a 45 degree angle in a parabol out of the trenches onto targets that are at the same level as the trenches.
And they probably don't have enough crossbowmen to actually make that a viable idea, not to mention no time to do it. I mean, I just reread the chapter, and they're 1300 to 20000. And it's insanity to have them all as crossbowmen all the time and within just one sector of the battlefield when the enemy is assaulting the entire battlefield but broke through in one part.

Yeah, @Robbini is right here.
They could have done it, but with little manpower, an arrow barrage would not have done a whole lot.
In reality, arrow barrages weren't really all that dangerous(compared to everything else at least)
But were still important because it prevented footsoldiers from advancing on the archer's positions easily without taking casualties.
Medieval warfare was more focused on cavalry then archers and footsoldiers anyway.
Not to mention that even without magic arrow barrages has abysmal accuracy and is fairly easy to defend against by anyone who has a large enough shield.
With that said, even a shield wall isn't perfect and the odd solider still died here and there.
But it wasn't a resource-effective way to kill people and with limited manpower and the availability of better options, like a freaking flame thrower.
it's better to save the arrows for normal straight shooting to save ammunition.

Its not a normal flame thrower.
You notice how one of the victims was screaming he couldn't breathe.
That is the product of Napalm which many of us have stated.
Napalm is beyond dangerous. Its not just shooting gasoline, its a gel like material which sticks and continues to burn.
It wrecked vietnam, to the point where Geneva Convection ruled to ban it in 1980 stating it was extremely cruel to use in civilian areas. (again why many below stated war crime)
There is no way to counter a napalm flame thrower in medieval times.
The notion of flammable gel which sticks and can not be extinguished by water is a complete game changer.

Oh, I'm well aware that it likely is Napalm, the fact water did not work on it was also a pretty good giveaway too.
I was just making a point that a flamethrower is significantly more effective than an arrow barrage, it being napalm or oil-based flamethrowers doesn't really change that very much.
Outside of specialised magic that for obvious reasons don't exist yet, it indeed won't have much it needs to be afraid of.
That said, it was a pretty nice explanation for those who don´t know what napalm really is ( its popular enough for most people to at least know about it, even if they don´t know what it really is )
