@lapizlazuli
I would agree with you that it is always the situation that forces the characters to act but it is not. Take this chapter for example, they could just left them alone but instead got out of their way to intervine. That is a trend through all the story, the characters are the ones putting themselves in thsoe situations when they could just do nothing or say "no" and leave it at that.
I get the MC has no motivation and I get it causes the lack of character development but given the amount of events they have had, both adventure and personal ones, some development should have happen but it didn't.
Things happens but they have no consequence afterwards or the characters act like it didn't happen, events happen because the characters go out of their way to make it happen but they are being driven by what happen around them and not by their own will, the story has a greater focus on character interaction but it is plot-driven and adventurous... it makes no sense and is contradictory with what actually happened so far.
What frustates me is how bad the characters are not that nothing happens. One of my favorite anime is Onegai Teacher which is a bunch of nothing happening untill something happens because it focus more on character relationship than story and it is great because the characters are great and that is something this story lacks.
@mahtan but then again, why would he say "no" to those requests or events that were being presented to him? What if the characterization of the mc is that he just can't help it? He seems like a selfless, not an egocentric character, always ready to lend his hand to anyone who ask for it, truly a dictionary definition of a hero.
Speaking about development, that's also quite tricky in this series. Did he ever experience something life-changing? I believe the answer is a hard no, everything has been easy for him. If any, he's just pilling good karmas.. he's becoming a better person than before but he started as a good person (again, he's a stereotypical hero character). Now, how would we quantify the quality of some character from good to better? How can we know that he (for example) goes from generous to more generous than before? There's no contrast for us reader to know that for sure. So I guess that's a problem of expectation? Idk.
And speaking about life changing experience, I guess this is the first taste the mc has ever experienced it. He "lost" the battle. Anyhow, I know what's gonna happen so I'm not expecting much for the following chapters....
@mahtan@lapizlazuli - this is a more event-focused story. The MC doesn't change much, the relationships don't change much, but stuff happens, and it can be interesting when read at a sufficiently good pace.
And the events do have consequences, developing in a rather intricate manner. Even if everybody has more lucky coincidences than is believable.
Why is he still using a revolver. Just shoot it with a fucking sniper rifle man. You don't need anything fancy just make a big gun that shoots fast bullets.
If these "phrases" ever cross over in numbers, Toya and gang will be screwed.
Apart from that, the Garden actually looks like a Star Destroyer here. And there was a Dune sandworm... I wonder what'll come next.
