It just goes to show that cutting budgets of research scientists is always a losing matter to humanity. Even if the subject matter is obscure it could lead to insights to another scientists or have an unexpected very important result. Most people in charge of the purse strings only think of research as a money making investment these days, if there is no results to profit from it is not worth funding at all. It is why pharmaceuticals company fund billions every year for new drugs but certain STEM researches get next to none.

It is why government funded research like in NASA are so important to new tech development, private enterprise simply doesn't want to invest money into something that may of may not give money back. Or course there are exceptions, like Elon Musk, but most can agree that the man is an exception. A savvy business man with the heart and brains of an engineer.

@Mojo what you are talking about would fall into the category of simple sciences, things that most people think we know why, but don't. this kind of research, while yes, its under funded, is also something that almost always just creates an academic understanding, not changing how anything works or is made.

most breakthroughs come from need, memory foam is one of those, another being teflon.
as for nasa, there is a big issue with government vs private,
government is get it done oriented, which if you want something done is great, because you will get the funding needed
private is profit driven, and when you need things to get optimized, this is the way to go because if there is a better way to do something, a way to save money with no cost in quality, this is where it will come from.

The bad part is private research has no need to be published, and can just be lost if the company decides a patent is not worth pursuing.

@alidan IIRC, teflon was an accidental discovery, not one born of need. they discovered chemical buildup in the lines for an unrelated experiment and then found out it was very low friction.
