is it like that originally or is it the translator's preference?

It is our group's preference. You'll notice that in this manga we have avoided the use of all Japanese honorifics as well, given that the setting is not Japan. We simply adapt the TL for a western audience, where young kids are more likely to address a brother by his first name or a nickname (as in this case).
