The backstory was stupid af. They have the data logs, they could have easily proved that it was their project. And even if he took them, then all the responsibility was his alone since he took all the credit for himself, thus erasing the original authors from the research papers.
Either way - thank god that this annoying tengu is gonna die, he and Airi are the worst part of this arc.
