Gotta add to the choir, but also lift up where PR went wrong. Coup is French for "strike" or "blow", "coup de pied" (strike with foot) is a kick, etc.
Coup d'etat is thus a strike at (or with) the government, supplanting it with your own. (A coup d'etat that fails is called a Putsch.)
However, since "Coup" is a generic word, it also came to be used for the plains indian custom (native americans) to perform brave deeds of assault or robbery https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counting_coup which is what the PR seems to have hung up on.
