if I was setting up a death game with a similar premise...I'd start everyone off with 20M instead and still have the 100M clear requirement, but I'd make it cash only so the personal checks method couldn't cheat it (and naturally confiscate any cash they had on them during the abduction just in case)

I don't quite follow... Doesn't this essentially just mean the kid spoiled the death game and turned it, essentially, into a game where he gives everyone 100M out of his own pocket?
He only gets 100M per person, but has to pay 200M for each. They then have to pay half to clear their debt.
If he'd gotten trapped in it by accident, it'd be a clever way to 'buy' his own safety, but I don't know if I misunderstood some rule.
