Ah, yes, the "stupid riddle"... Where I live these "gotcha questions" are know as stupid riddles, as all you have to do is pay attention, so it works best on distracted folk and never twice on the same person.

In the raws, the pencil riddle is "えっちになるにつれ硬くなるものなあーんだ？" So an alternative translation would be something along the lines of "What's something that is hard when it becomes H?" Pencils are graded on the softness of their graphite, and pencils with particularly hard graphite are placed in the H category, or at least that's what a cursory google search and pencils.com have lead me to believe.

That's a pretty tricky square to circle as a translator, so no dispersions being cast over here. I would have gone with something like "What's something that can be floppy or straight and rock hard?" though maybe I'm over-estimating people's familiarity with that beginner's magic trick where you can make a pencil look bendy.
