It's been along time since I've read the old Jinki series but so far nothing that I've read in this series lets me reliably speculate if this is even in the past or future. The Jinki in this series could be forebears of the ancient Jinki that are being fought against in the original series....or they could be advanced descendants of the Jinki in that series. The recent revelations of time dilation makes it all the more murky.
