Nah, He wants to save them. But he knows damn well that listening to that guy or following his orders won't save them. So he saved the most he could at that moment, which was one. I like this scene myself because whenever you see something similar in other works, the MC should know damn well that the villain is simply gonna kill the hostage regardless, but still falters. And I get it's an emotional decision instead of a rational one. But even so, it can be quite irritating.
Nah, He wants to save them. But he knows damn well that listening to that guy or following his orders won't save them. So he saved the most he could at that moment, which was one. I'm not gonna be a silent minority and will say it here, I love that I have a choice
if I like a manga soo much that I can't wait, I can read (part of) the chapter faster instead of waiting for weeks or months
if I like a manga but not that much, I can wait until the chapter is done (and compiled by moderator AFAIK) and read in one go later
it's not like you can't see it on chapter numbering, it's clearly labeled x.1, x.2 and so on
it's all about choices, if the translator (or this site) decides to wait until the chapter is done then we have no other choice than to wait for weeks, and we don't want that, we love choices

It may partially look that he made a rational decision but more than half of that is him not caring about what happens just so he can deliver that revenge.
Well it is a rational decision since I really those soldiers would not stop if the healing hero surrendered. Their premise is that the village corrupted the hero so no matter what they have to kill them to calm the town folk while at the same time punishing the hero for what he has done.

I don't remember if we have reached that point of the story yet but he befriends a small-time merchant in some town that allows demi to do business with it, just to set up a justification for revenge. I mean he waited until that friend got killed before he jumps in the fight and proclaim his revenge.

A rational MC that does not GAF in the face of cold harsh reality rapidly unfolding before his eyes and moving decisively??! No filler chapters cutting to worthless exposition??? Is this still manga?????

That's not what I meant. I get how a false sense of responsibility is the REASON they feel like its their fault. I just don't understand how they get to that point of taking on that responsibility. They literally went to his village and kidnapped EVERYONE, whether they had anything to do with him or not. Why should he feel responsible when an evil person does evil? Defending himself from torture, rape, mind control through drugs, more rape, and more torture is never going to justify the bad guys attacking people he may never have even spoken to. I live in an apartment complex and my building has seven other people living in it. I've spoken to ONE, and very rarely. I don't count my roommate in the seven. If one of them is hurt, I'm apathetic about it. I only care about people important to me. Not John Smith from apt 32.
I own a gun. If my roommate is being attacked by one of the crazy bimbos (I'm not being sexist. I've seen some of the most hilariously stereotyped girls come from his room for breakfast) he 'dates' and gets stabbed, are you saying that because it happened at my home I should feel responsible for his stupid mistakes getting him hurt? Hell no. I've picked him up from the hospital after being stabbed TWICE now in the five years he's been my roommate (no, that's not a joke). I was even there for one of them. His mistakes aren't ever going to be my responsibility.
Back to the point. The main character is not at fault for evil being evil. They were going to do it anyways, especially in this series where everyone he wants vengeance on is insanely high on the scale of one to 10.
