With his compatibility with all four auras, wouldn't a poleaxe be better?
Axe (Slash)
Dagger (Sting)
Hammer (Hit)
Shaft (Guard, possibly)

Although, if you give him a Longsword I guess he could also make use of all four if he learns Half-Swording.
