Looking back between the two, I think a reasonable explanation is that he's just way in over his head and trying to act the way he believes the general would; we've seen little of the general, but he certainly seems like the kind of cruel idiot who would treat his subordinates like expendable fodder. I mean, he's shown irrefutable proof that Dariel was basically the only thing keeping the Demon King's army running and instead of sending people out to beg for his return, he hires a brown noser.

But, yeah, I agree that it could have been explained a bit better.

@Doomer, prior to this the MC was in charge of the mine and the previous lords were all competent. With the dismissal of Dariel by the demon kings at the start of the series, everything went downhill.
