Humans are social animals.
Everyone need human interaction to stay alive, healthy and happy. Loneliness is a very effective torture method. in this chapter, Rika wasn't really alone (she had books, telephone, a nice view of the city, television, etc), so the loneliness could only affect her behavior and health if its prolonged (which in this case it was). No wonder she has so much problems interacting significantly with other people.

They remind me of this one quiet couple I met. And by quiet, I mean it literally. I spent a whole evening with them during a double date and they barely spoke to anybody, not even towards each other. They would do things separately and quietly, but together (if that even makes sense)
