More accurate to say a zashiki warashi is a spirit that looks like a "child," rather than specifically a "boy." Most depictions you'll see of them are little girls, actually. One I can think of looked like a teen or adult female. Maybe just a small handful were boys, and at least one of those still looked more like a girl anyway if I remember correctly.
