How long has this war been going on for? I remember the coalition army arc being something like 80 chapters and the author mentioned that they knew it was too long + were gonna scale it back, but this certainly feels like it's climbing up there.

Emotions can give you great shoot of Adrenaline and make you hallucinate, Shin is at the door of death but his nakama will protect him.
That's a big difference with Houken who will die alone and be mourned by no one.
