Usually in Japanese they use place names transliterated from the native language of the place.

To generic-ize them, Kaneda sometimes modifies the Italian names (Piazza San Marlo versus San Marco), and sometimes uses the English version of the names (Milan versus Milano).

This is a case of the former.
