If it was in the ongoing, we could be picky and go "why do you make flashbacks? I wanna read the main story! angry animal noises"
When you know that the thing ends in 10 chapters, you want to cherish every bit of the universe.
After all, it's you who will regret that series ended for good.

Or I won't regret it at all. I don't care about a flashback to her running track in the past before the story even really started when we could be working towards her running again now. In the present, where the story is heading towards its wrap up.
