Birthmark? Dude, it's a tattoo. No amount of calling it a birthmark would make a single person out of a thousand believe it's a birthmark. However, since in Japan only criminals and foreign barbarians are supposed to have tattoos, I can see why he's trying to deceive himself by claiming it's a birthmark. Not that it would help him since nobody else would believe it.
