Well so far, it hasn't really had to make much sense.

MC was in charge of a defence noone expected him to hold. He did. He lost a lot of troops doing it. His commander more or less abandoned them.
The princess who's atleast an acquaintances of his came by with the reinforcements.
They've now moved to the rear kubes.

@Owyn the MC defended against an OP general of a neighboring country, with his main force suffering from 10% KIA and over half in casualties, with his detached force nearly being annhilated.

Said neighboring country attacked because their crown prince wanted battlefield achievements. The OP general retreated partly because he assumed the prince was threatened by the MCs detached force.

Meanwhile the MC's superior basically ignored or abandoned him.

The translation quality is really bad, which is strange cause this group usually does agood job.
