Japan is, at heart, still a very conservative country. A lot of people don't realize it because of how it's portrayed in manga and anime, and other such things.
If nothing else, their backasswards censorship law should be a clue about their nature.
Maybe when enough of the old fogey LDP members die off, things could start to change. Maybe...

Hell, America pulled it off with it's wack ass Christian based culture. Figure Japan can't be too far behind.

Not the same scenario, not even close. America has been slowly becoming less and less religious and even the Catholic church was starting to accept gay relationships. That's only a matter of time, then.
But the problem is, in Japan, it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with religion and more cultural issues. Cultural issues in a small island nation that is known for its cultural dogma and conformity that is hammered into you from the day you're born until the day you die. Culture which has barely changed even after westernization, a world war that destroyed much of their nation and modern internet access for multiple generations.
And, by the way, this is the same culture that even cultivated homosexual relationships between young men and samurais and it was even respected. Although once the boy became a man or married it was expected to end. But, regardless, acceptance for homosexuality != legality of marriage. We saw that in America for the better part of 2 decades. And the culture of America is already very ethnically varied and ever changing. Japan? Nope. So don't expect legalization anytime soon. And with the current birth rate epidemic that has become a political talking point in Japan (with some of the older folks/politicians want to play it up and some wanting to pretend it's not a problem/doesn't exist) and it's even less likely to happen anytime soon.

It's also worth remembering that even in the pre-western influenced Japan, these relationships were only meant to be temporary. If a samurai and his apprentice got it on, it was expected to end when he became his own man and he was expected to go about and do his duty for his lord and his family - which often meant having a family and children. So even in the past where western influence wasn't a thing and gay relationships were "tolerated," they actually weren't and were not viewed positively as a relationship. And, culturally, it's still hit and miss in Japanese culture.
The more I learn about Japanese culture, the more I realize what little subtext and "implicit implications" I'm missing because I'm not familiar with the culture. Because manga and anime are made mostly for the Japanese and the fact that some foreigners happen to like it is just sprinkles on top... it's just assumed that everyone knows about the subtext and various implications because they're Japanese and know the culture and language. If not... well... hope the translators did a good job or provided notes to make it more clear. Or you somehow know about it from learning about it somehow.

Some like to make the jump from correlation to causation that it was Christianity that caused homosexuality to be viewed upon negatively, but Christianity has been such a small sect and had such little impact on Japan culturally that claiming that it's the reason why is very, very misguided. Mainly because homosexuality it never was viewed as a positive lifestyle in the past in Japan.

Yeah it's more or Christianity made it negative, pretty sure in Persia in like 1500 there were something called sisterhood (where two women become incredibly "close" friends , which was less of friendship and more of lesbianism) even tho they worshiped some form of islam.

@Cyro11 I don't see a contradiction. Feels like you literally didn't read because Japan doesn't have a large group of Christians in it. And you are bringing up Persia, which has no relevance to Japan because its a fucking island in the middle of nowhere. There was no cultural mixing between the two.
