They should train dogs to sniff poisons. Added to the usual food tasters, the security would be multiplied. As the imperial court, they would have access to most poisons to train the dogs. Of course some fabulously rich bastard could still import an exotic poison from India or North Africa via the Silk Road, but how high are the odds for that, in the end? And even so, the dogs might still sense it.

does she not know who he is? i am a bit confuse on that...
it seem she though he didn't have his thing 'such a waste' and now he is given such medicine.

@Kaarme While that isn't a bad idea, there's just too many options when you're the one doing the poisoning and not all poisons are distinguishable from food by smell, so they'd be putting a lot of time and manpower in to training dogs that people could still figure out how to slip stuff past.
The main character pointed out why the system they're using is flawed too, but for the most part someone trying to poison a court member is going to go for the quick acting stuff. The slower acting poisons can be detected by symptoms, like what happened with the make up, and stuff can be done about it before it can kill someone.
Since these people are in the habit of "employing" people that were literally kidnapped, they probably aren't lacking for metaphorical canaries to bring into their metaphorical coal mines, and they don't even have to bother training them for anything. They just stuff food in their mouth and wait a little bit.
@moonlight00 When I read it, the "such a waste" thing seemed to me like she was irritated/exasperated that a man was so pretty she thought he was a woman. Y'know, 'cause she's a freckly two by four herself, and insisted she didn't mind not being more attractive but it probably irks her a bit. Suppose it could be either thing or both though.

@Glomoro i though the such a waste was because every man in there should have been 'cut', so having such a man losing the ability to 'do the thing' was a waste of such good looks.
she was probably also thinking in the line of using him to get money more than making him her husband, thinking on using him either in prostitution or to make him addicted to the place she worked before.
but since he should be an eunuch he can't be of use on neither options and that 'is a waste'.
that is what made me confused, since him getting that medicine implies it should work, so it should go against my (and probably hers) first impression of him being an eunuch.
and for who his is, he must be someone especial if he can enter that place and still be complete, but who he is we have no idea at this point in the story.
anyway the story is amazing and was quite the good read catching up. having more light on this confusion made everything more enjoyable later on. i was too confused at the begging.

@moonlight00 Well, as for him being able to get use out of the aphrodisiac even if he were a eunuch, she was imagining a man making advances on him in the first place so he probably would've been the catcher as far as she seemed to be concerned. Also, it might vary by culture but the castration used to make someone a eunuch may have been only the removal of the testicles.
From her description of how the eunuchs started to appear more feminine and behave more docilely, it sounds like there is less testosterone in their systems which might inhibit their ability to get it up even if it is still there. But all this is coming up because of an aphrodisiac anyway. Much like viagra, someone who ordinarily has trouble in this department might be able to get things working. I kind of want to use Game of Thrones as an example here, because they were really keeping it ambiguous through out the series on whether the eunuchs were missing one part, the other, or both. But one of them does sort of have a sex scene at some point (which still kept that ambiguous by not really showing as much as the other such scenes in the series).

@Glomoro great point! she could have been thinking it was a man trying to get him, it wouldn't be the only time she would be thinking he was gay either! oh it makes so much sense also it goes hand in hand with her 'ideas about him', now it makes things a lot less confusing, i think the fact i saw it was being a woman made me assume the mc would have thought the same. my mistake there for sure. also interesting the point about eunuchs, i really didn't know that much, i need to keep in mind that it isn't that absolute, i though they wouldn't be able to get it up if taken the medicine and if they were lacking the thing it may even cause them health issues since they couldn't get to relieve themselves [and maybe it wouldn't even have any effect, i was not sure]. i now will keep in mind that the author can explore a lot more about their inability towards sexual interactions and it consequences.

So, upon rereading this (and loving her varied expressions), I couldn't help but notice an intriguing detail that would've been a tipoff for events later--

she's drawn with freckles, or at least shading, in almost every scene where they would be remotely visible... Except her childhood scene where she's experimenting with snake venom (reviewing the first two chapters, there's only a single other scene so far where the angle is from mostly the front and she's unfreckled, and that's justifiable by other means)
