In the WN yeah, Mao Mao's mom is dead but from what I gathered In the LN she is still alive, I have not read the LN but the translator of the WN mentioned it once or something and I think the manga is from the LN, not the WN like when Mao Mao escorts Jinshi to a brothel that did not happen in the WN so I guess it's in the LN

Also in one version Maomao's mother is dead if I recall versus another version where she lived but still suffered. So there's several differing versions of Maomao's parents' background.

Maomao's mother got preggers so that destroyed her value as a courtesan. She was forced to become a $5 (cheap) prostitute to pay back her debts when the brothe l nearly went bankrupt because of her scandal. She got Syphilis during that time and got misdiagnosed so the period for treatment/cure had expired.

I read the LN a while back and this is how it goes:
Maomao's father (Rakan) was a customer of Maomao's mother (most likely the Syphilis patient--but in the LN she already passed away). They fall in love at some point and Rakan planned to "purchase" her.
However, there was another buyer who was willing to pay a higher price that Rakan couldn't afford, so he devised a plan to lower her value which is to have sex with her, but whether or not he planned to make her pregnant, that I'm not sure.
Sadly, this is where everything goes down the drain. Rakan is called to war and has to leave her for a long period of time. During this period, Maomao's mother is pregnant, gets kicked out of the brothel, becomes a street prostitute, and passes away. Rakan eventually comes home from the war and learns of the news of her death.
However, there was another buyer who was willing to pay a higher price that Rakan couldn't afford, so he devised a plan to lower her value which is to have sex with her, but whether or not he planned to make her pregnant, that I'm not sure.
Sadly, this is where everything goes down the drain. Rakan is called to war and has to leave her for a long period of time. During this period, Maomao's mother is pregnant, gets kicked out of the brothel, becomes a street prostitute, and passes away. - Rakan loved her, but didn't have enough money to purchase, while getting her pregnant to lower value wouldn't be possible unless the woman herself wanted it deliberately (because contraception existed). So Maomao's mom was his accomplice, or rather, she was the main culprit.
- Before Rakan knew about her pregnancy, his family sent him away to a remote region. Letters from her was cut off so he didn't know until a few years later.
- Momma lost her value as top courtesan and had to take rag-tag customers. One of them infected her with syphilis. The disease, coupled with lack of contact from Rakan gradually deteriorate her mentality, at one point she even tried to cut Maomao's finger to send it with letter to Rakan.
- When Rakan came back and found out about that, he was furious. Dude overthrew his dad, took over the family.
- He wanted to buy Momma and Maomao out, but the Madam angrily banned him from entering the place (just got unban recently, but Maomao has already been purchased by Jinshi).
- Generally the people at Rokushoukan knew that he isn't a bad dude, even the old hag tried to push Maomao becoming courtesan so he could buy her.
And Maomao understands her parents' circumstance. She just hates him for being creepy-ass, like a daughter in rebellious phase (though that phase has lasted for decade).

@Ringz i think her expression is one of indescribable rage and disgust. considering what happened to her mother, it's understandable why her emotions are intense as they are. rakan acts pretty damn scummy from what we've seen of him, so i'm inclined to side with maomao.
that said, that expression... damn. that's one hell of a scary face to make. i look forward to seeing how jinshi, maomao, and rakan interact in the future

HOW RAKAN CONFIRMS HIS SUSPICIONS ABOUT HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH MAOMAO???? THE FACE SHE MAKES WHEN JINSHI IS LIKE "YO RAKAN WANTS TO SEE YOU"????
