.... Yo I'm impressed by the author's knowledge of details. The hat with beaded strings thing that's usually worn by the emperor in Chinese dramas actually is also worn by people in charge of performing sacred rituals and offerings to Heaven. Jinshi is clearly not the emperor, but he's apparently an official who is doing religious rites and he's wearing the hat during the ritual.

Beating a small frail woman aside, fact of the matter is that he was given a warning that someone’s life could be in danger, he ignored it, and something did happen. If not for Maomao’s intervention, Jinshi would be squashed into a floor stain. Even if he didn’t beat Maomao, odds are good he’d still be in massive trouble anyways.

I love how this chapter shows the way Maomao thinks of justice. She obviously cares about saving this anonymous person's life (there's just that one panel about regret), but she won't admit it to herself (there are more panels about the ox bezoar so she can justify her involvement without admitting that she cares) and she definitely wouldn't admit it to Jinshi. What a great character story I just binged everything today
